FINDING BALANCE—IN LAW AND IN LIFE
Growing up in Maplewood, New Jersey, James saw the power of thoughtful analysis firsthand. His father, a self-employed economist, published a newsletter that helped banks navigate economic trends. His mother pursued a legal career before illness cut her journey short. Inspired by her path, James found his way to law, but not before an eye-opening stint on Wall Street.
“I wanted a profession that prioritizes people over profits,” he shares. “Law isn’t just about resolving disputes. It’s about guiding clients through challenges that no algorithm can solve.”
James built his career in New Jersey’s tight-knit workers’ compensation community, where long-standing relationships define success. That’s what led him to Jones Jones, where he was introduced through mutual connections.
“I already respected the firm’s approach—doing the right thing, ensuring injured workers receive care, and resolving cases with fairness. I knew I’d found the right fit.”
A thoughtful listener, James believes legal expertise means little without understanding a client’s real concerns. “Legal training teaches you how to categorize cases, but great lawyering starts with setting that aside, at least for a moment, to truly hear your client’s needs.” His approach balances sharp legal strategy with clear communication, ensuring clients feel fully informed and confident in the outcome.
James is known for his calm and steady nature, both in and out of the courtroom. He believes that balance—between work and family, listening and leading—is the key to a fulfilling life.
At home, he and his wife, Dawn (also an accomplished attorney), have created a home filled with warmth, music, and laughter. Their two sons keep life dynamic, while the family cats, ever watchful from their perch atop the fridge, preside over the household’s daily rhythms.
Whether taking long walks through Riverdale, attending Mets games, or enjoying an autism-friendly play with his son, James finds joy in the everyday moments that keep him centered.
He’s also a dedicated music enthusiast and writer. His blog, The Necessary Blues, champions jazz, electronic, and ambient artists. His radio show, Where Is Brooklyn?, brings these sounds to life on WKVR Vassar College radio. “It’s my way of supporting artists who create outside the mainstream,” he says.
For James, success isn’t about winning at all costs. It’s about finding the path forward with integrity, balance, and a commitment to the people he serves.
