A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION
Michelle’s interest in law dates back to the 17th century. “My sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Birgeles, gave a lecture about early European settlers,” she recalls. “I led my team in a land dispute and found that I thoroughly enjoy advocating for others.”
From there, Michelle participated in student government and National Moot Court Competitions, earned a BA in Law & Society from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and completed her studies at Brooklyn Law School.
Originally from Guyana, Michelle’s family moved to the U.S. when she was just a baby. Not surprisingly, she possesses an enviable blend of strength and diplomacy. “I love to succeed at everything I do,” she says. “I’m headstrong and enjoy leading, but I’m just as happy supporting my colleagues.”
Sarah Thomas and Dana Sagbhir saw these qualities in Michelle when she first joined the firm as an intern and paralegal. “It meant a lot that a managing partner saw I had what it takes to succeed,” she says. “Sarah’s support was very encouraging, and Dana’s mentorship was truly priceless.”
When asked why our firm was the perfect fit, she says it came down to the people and culture. “I thought a lot about where I wanted to practice and the type of place where I’d be free to thrive.” In particular, Matt Jones’s vision for growing the firm, attracting the best talent, and excelling in new areas such as our construction practice aligned with Michelle’s goals. “I saw how much I could develop here,” she says.
Down time for Michelle includes reading, trivia, psychological thrillers, and multiplayer board games like Catan that take decisiveness, adaptability, and a knack for assessing risk. “Strategy games require you to anticipate your opponent’s next move,” she says.
The art of debate made a lasting impression on Michelle –– and she made a lasting impression on us.
Welcome aboard, Michelle!
